The government will no longer provide toll-free travels during festive seasons starting this year. Instead, a 50% discount on toll fees will be offered, confirmed Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi today.

In his announcement, the minister highlights that  this measure will help the government save costs, reducing the annual payment to highway concessionaires to just RM80 million versus an estimated sum of RM180 million for fully-waived toll fees.

He further added that the 50% toll discount will continue to be applied for a total of eight days each year, as previously practiced.

This came following the government’s recognition that people still require this support during festive seasons. The decision also followed public concerns raised after the minister's earlier announcement that toll-free festive travel would be discontinued in 2025.

Across the recent Chinese New Year holidays, a 50% discount on toll fees was announced and implemented. Looking ahead, the government will implement this discounted toll fees scheme for all festive periods, including the upcoming Hari Raya Aidil Fitri and beyond.

Datuk Alexander further elaborated that the Cabinet may review and adjust its decisions as needed. He clarified that the cost of the toll discounts is fully covered by the government, not by the highway concessionaires.

He also expressed hope that the public understands this toll discount is ultimately funded by taxpayers' money.
