PLUS Expressways Bhd is reportedly spearheading an initiative among highway concessionaires to develop their own Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) systems. This move is seen as a measure to curb potential profit exploitation and misuse during the implementation phase.

According to TheEdge, PLUS aims to commence testing a prototype of its MLFF system by April. While the final system remains undecided, PLUS holds an advantage through its association with Teras Teknologi Sdn Bhd, the provider of electronic toll collection systems for most highway concession companies.

In an effort to streamline toll collection and ensure prompt payment, concession companies operating toll roads are planning to integrate their systems with the Road Transport Department (RTD). This integration will make it mandatory for road users to settle any outstanding toll fees before they are allowed to renew their road tax.

The initial target for implementing barrier-free toll highways was 2025, as set by the government. However, recent developments have raised uncertainties about whether the plan will be executed as scheduled this year or if it will face postponement.

With an estimated implementation cost of RM3.46 billion, the system will replace the existing booth-based toll collection system with overhead gantries on 33 Malaysian highways. These gantries will collect tolls using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology along with an automated number plate recognition (ANPR) system.
