Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) inked an MoU recently, and this will see both parties collaborating in several energy-related solutions.

TNB will be tasked with setting up its TNB Electron charging stations at selected Perodua outlets in a move to enhance convenience and support wider adoption of EVs among Malaysians. This mirrors a similar collaboration by Peordua with Petronas’ Gentari arm prior.

Besides that, the TNB-Perodua partnership also aims to strengthen the nation’s EV charging infrastructure, as well as integrate renewable energy solutions, and make EVs even more accessible and affordable for Malaysians.

Furthermore, this collaboration aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Malaysia’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. With EV adoption on the rise the gap between infrastructure readiness and consumer confidence needs to be filled for a seamless shift to sustainable mobility.

In addition to EV charging stations, the partnership will see TNB develop solar panel infrastructure at Perodua premises. By generating clean energy, Perodua aims to reduce operational costs and contribute to a greener automotive ecosystem..

Additionally, this collaboration also includes vendors and dealers’ engagement towards the adopting sustainable energy practices and creating a more environmentally friendly supply chain.

To further support their sustainability goals, TNB will facilitate the adoption of the Malaysia Renewable Energy Certificates (mREC) for Perodua. This will help the automaker reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions -  commitment to carbon neutrality.

In its press statement, TNB also detailed that it is actively expanding its EV charging network across strategic locations, including shopping malls, highways, petrol stations, and commercial and residential hubs.

As of February 2025, TNB has 66 Electron charging points at 19 EV charging stations across Peninsular Malaysia.

“The adoption of EVs is no longer a distant goal; it is happening now. TNB is committed to ensuring that EV users have access to a robust and reliable charging network.” remarked Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin, CEO of TNB.

He also adds that the collaboration with Perodua “will accelerate these efforts by integrating charging solutions into their extensive automotive network.”

As Malaysia’s largest car manufacturer, Perodua is uniquely positioned to drive mass EV adoption as it has the scale, expertise, and market reach to make EVs more affordable.

“Perodua and TNB share a common goal of promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. This collaboration complements our EV journey by ensuring accessibility, affordability, and convenience for Malaysians,” notes Perodua President and CEO, Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
