- JB-Gemas Double-Tracking Project A Boost For National Rail System - Johor MB
The Gemas-Johor Baru Electric Double Tracking Project (PLBEGJB) is a significant upgrade to Malaysia's rail network, especially in the southern region. By connecting Johor Baru to Padang Besar, Perlis, it also completes the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Electric Double Tracking Project along Peninsular Malaysia's west coast.
According to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the project represents a key element of Johor's ongoing infrastructure modernization initiative.
This undertaking, he argues, will yield substantial benefits for both the state and its residents, while simultaneously enhancing Johor's overall competitiveness and attractiveness as a destination for investment and development.
The electric train service (ETS) between Gemas and Johor Bahru began on Saturday in Segamat, he added, while the Labis station would open in April, followed by Kluang the following month and Johor Baru in September.
“With the double tracks, the journey from KL Sentral to JB Sentral will only take 3 hours and 30 minutes, making it a faster, comfortable and efficient option. The 192-kilometre track crosses Segamat, Kluang, Kulai and Johor Baru before ending at JB Sentral.
“With a speed of up to 160 km/h, this electric train can make 22 trips a day with 346 seats per train,” he said in a Bernama report.
The Gemas-Johor Baru ETS has successfully launched its operations. The inaugural ETS train departed from Segamat Station and reached its final destination, Padang Besar, at 7:55 a.m. on Saturday (March 15) morning.
This accomplishment was announced by KTMB group chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin, who stated that the introduction of the Gemas-Johor Baru ETS is expected to enhance connectivity and improve travel efficiency for passengers between the two major cities and other stations along the route.
