- Gemas-JB ETS Expected To Launch In Aug 2025
The Electric Train Service (ETS) between Gemas and Johor Bahru is nearing completion and is expected to start running in August. This project is anticipated to cut travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru from the current seven hours by diesel train to just 4.5 hours.
The RM9.5 billion project, with trains traveling at speeds of 140km/h, includes 11 stations across four major districts in Johor: Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, and Johor Bahru. It will connect with the Padang-Gemas EDT line at Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, providing seamless electric train travel from Johor all the way north to Padang Besar in Perlis, on the Malaysia-Thailand border.
The Gemas-Johor Bahru electrified double-track rail line will serve approximately 3,000 daily commuters between KL and JB, offering 22 daily trips with a capacity of 300-500 passengers per trip. The service will be similar to existing KTMB Komuter networks in Klang Valley, northern Perak, and Perlis.
Upon completion, this route will integrate into a seamless rail network connecting Peninsular Malaysia's southern tip to Padang Besar on the Thai border, reducing traffic congestion for commuters and tourists traveling between KL and Johor.
Despite setbacks since the start of construction in 2017, including issues with electrical supply testing and property acquisition, officials remain optimistic about the revised completion date. The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, expected to open by January 2027, and this project both retain priority status, according to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
