As ASEAN Chair in 2025, Malaysia is taking the lead in shaping the region’s mobility future. This was announced by MITI Minister Tengku Zafrul during the recent ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 flag-off ceremony.

He highlighted the importance of sustainable mobility to maintain the region’s competitive edge as the world’s fifth-largest economic bloc - USD 3.5 trillion.

To accelerate growth, Malaysia introduced 18 Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) for 2025, including the ASEAN EV Policy and Guidelines. The New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the National Automotive Policy (NAP 2020) aim to transform Malaysia from just a producer to an innovator.

NIMP 2030 focuses on high-value manufacturing and sustainability, while NAP 2020 positions Malaysia as a key automotive hub. Public-private partnerships are at the core of these policies to drive innovation and progress.

The automotive sector is a crucial part of Malaysia’s economy, generating jobs, technological advancements, and GDP growth. Under NIMP 2030, Malaysia is working to establish itself as a regional EV manufacturing center.

The government also plans to standardize EV charging and Battery Swapping Standard across the region to reduce costs and make adoption more convenient.

Tengku Zafrul also highlighted that ASEAN needs to integrate its supply chains to improve efficiency, lower reliance on external markets and build a more resilient automotive ecosystem by capitalizing on each country’s strengths.

With strong partnerships and a commitment to green transport, Malaysia and ASEAN will be well-positioned to lead the way in sustainable mobility.
