- Prasarana Implements Safety Measures Following Fatal LRT Incident
The investigation into the tragic incident involving a visually impaired man who was struck and killed by a train after falling onto the tracks at the Titiwangsa Light Rail Transit (LRT) station on Feb 22 has been completed.
The findings have been submitted to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).
According to Prasarana Malaysia Berhad’s president and group CEO Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, a special committee was formed to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident and propose measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
In response to the tragedy, Prasarana has increased the presence of auxiliary police and operational staff on platforms, particularly at stations frequently used by persons with disabilities.
“As part of our mid-term strategy, we are looking into the feasibility of installing platform sensors that can detect when someone moves beyond the designated safety zone and immediately alert staff,” Mohd Azharuddin stated.
He also revealed that, in the long run, Prasarana intends to install platform screen doors - similar to those used at MRT stations - to enhance passenger safety.
Speaking at the Pasar Seni Bus and Rail Hub while meeting Rapid KL personnel working during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Mohd Azharuddin noted that 3,730 staff members were on duty across bus and rail operations to ensure smooth services as people traveled for the holiday.
He added that the number of personnel would be increased to over 5,000 when residents return to the city after the break.
Addressing concerns over a cybersecurity threat that impacted specific systems at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on March 23, Mohd Azharuddin assured that Prasarana is working closely with the National Cyber Security Agency to maintain vigilance.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has also directed the company to keep its cybersecurity systems at peak performance.
