- BYD Overtakes Tesla In Europe For The First Time
Shenzhen-based BYD just beat Tesla in European electric car sales for the first time ever in April 2025. This is a significant turning point for BYD in the rivalry between Tesla and the Chinese auto giant.
Elon Musk's Tesla is currently struggling, primarily due to the CEO's divisive views and political activity. Still, it may come as a surprise that BYD, a relatively young player in the EV market, has overtaken its largest competitor so quickly.
According to JATO Dynamics, BYD registered 7,231 electric vehicles in Europe in April, slightly exceeding Tesla's 7,165 registrations. Global Analyst Felipe Munoz views this as a significant shift for the European auto industry.
Even though the numbers were close that month, it's worth noting that Tesla's been on top in Europe for a while now, and BYD only officially expanded beyond Norway and the Netherlands at the end of 2022.
To further solidify BYD’s victory, Tesla's sales declined last month, despite stable European demand. BEVs accounted for 17%,up from 13.4% and PHEVs for 9%, an increase from 6.9% of the 1.1 million new European car registrations in April, largely driven by Chinese automakers.
Even with substantial tariffs imposed by the European Union (EU), Chinese companies' BEV sales surged by 59% year over year (Y-O-Y) to approximately 15,300 units in April.
While carmakers from Europe, Japan, South Korea and the US posted only a 26 per cent increase in sales, the report indicates.
What’s more, BYD’s growth comes prior to commencing production at its upcoming Hungary-based facility and before the initial deliveries of the newly debut BYD Dolphin Surf EV.
