Global sales for electrified vehicles are up by 30% as of April 2025, with China and Europe leading the pack.

Despite the uncertainty caused by the newly imposed tariffs by the US government, sales for electrified vehicles continue to surge so far this year, with a total of 5.6 million battery EVs (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) sold in the first four months of 2025. This positive sales figure marks a nearly 30% increase in global electrified vehicle sales compared to last year.

According to data from RhoMotion, global sales of BEVs and PHEVs showed a positive growth in April this year, with a total of 1.5 million units sold in the last month alone—a 29% increase compared to the same month last year. However, it’s worth noting that April sales dipped by 12% compared to the previous month, which were boosted by the initial panic buying of BEVs and PHEVs amidst the new tariffs announcement.

To no one’s surprise, China continues to lead both BEV and PHEV global sales, with a total of 3.3 million units shifted in said Great Wall nation as of April this year. While this marked a healthy 35% jump from last year, sales in April slipped by 9% compared to March this year but were up 32% compared to April 2024.

Trailing behind China is Europe, with its BEV and PHEV sales having surged by 25% in the first four months of 2025 compared to last year, reaching 1.2 million units. Again, to no one’s surprise, BEVs continue to dominate Europe’s electrified vehicle sales, with a 29% increase in sales year-to-date, outpacing the 16% growth in PHEVs.

On top of that, almost all key European markets like Germany (+42%), Italy (+56%), Spain (+57%), and the UK (+32%) are all reporting significant increases in both BEV and PHEV sales, although France has experienced a 14% drop in sales so far this year.

Across the pond, sales for BEVs and PHEVs in North America have seen a surprisingly steady growth as of April this year, with 600,000 vehicles sold so far—thus marking a 5% increase from last year. While no detailed breakdown for the US, Canada, and Mexico was provided, CarScoops reported that sales in Mexico have nearly doubled year-to-date.

According to RhoMotion data manager Charles Lester, the increase in BEV and PHEV global sales is attributed to the resilient performance of domestic manufacturers in both China and Europe. With the ongoing tariff negotiations dominating talks in the EV industry, market shares for both BEVs and PHEVs are expected to grow further this year.
