The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is preparing to take firm action against goods vehicle and express bus operators who have failed to settle their outstanding traffic summonses. The deadline for payment is July 8, and those who do not comply will face immediate blacklisting and removal from the roads.

This enforcement comes after the Ministry of Transport (MOT) recently named several commercial vehicle companies with high numbers of unresolved summonses. Eleven goods vehicle companies were found to have accumulated more than 1,000 outstanding summonses each, while 17 express bus operators had over 200.

Most of the offences committed by goods vehicle operators involve technical defects such as faulty brakes or tyres, illegal modifications, overloading and driving without valid documents like licences or insurance. For express buses, common violations include speeding, lane misuse, queue-jumping, and mobile phone usage while driving.

JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli confirmed today that the department will begin enforcement at midnight on July 8. He said JPJ teams will be on the roads, ready to act against any heavy vehicles that have not cleared their dues.

He also noted a significant rise in the number of operators settling their summonses since Transport Minister Anthony Loke issued the 14-day ultimatum last Friday. Operators who believe there are discrepancies in their summons records are encouraged to visit JPJ offices to verify their status.

This crackdown follows a spate of deadly road accidents in recent months and forms part of the ministry’s effort to tighten control over commercial transport safety.

Separately, the government is also pushing ahead with new safety regulations requiring all heavy vehicles registered after Jan 1, 2015, to be equipped with Speed Limit Devices (SLD) starting Oct 1 this year. Older vehicles must comply by Jan 1, 2026, with all installations to be completed by July of that year.
