Transport Minister Anthony Loke (centre) revealed he has instructed JPJ and APAD to step up their enforcement efforts against repeat offenders.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke recently revealed that he had directed both the Road Trasport Department (JPJ) and Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to beef up enforcement against repeat commercial vehicle traffic offenders, as well as firms that consistently violate traffic rules.

“I have instructed JPJ and APAD to intensify enforcement, especially targeting repeat offenders and companies with a history of violations,” said Loke to local press earlier this week during a press conference to officially announce the digitalisation of the MY50 pass.

“Proactive measures, including audits, must be conducted, and these will take place regardless of whether an incident has occurred,” he added further. This is set to include proactive audits of transport companies, even in the absence of specific incidents.

Loke revealed this directive earlier this week, and this was undoubtedly spurred by recent fatal incidents occuring in the last few months.

Additionally, the minster also acknowledged receiving complaints about lorry drivers concealing traffic summonses, thus creating a backlog of unpaid fines.

Loke then reminded that commercial vehicle permits are issued by APAD, and permit holders are responsible for addressing any violations. This comes form the onset of delays in taking action against repeat offenders.

“When a vehicle is summoned, it is the permit holder, the vehicle owner, who must address the drivers’ violations,” Loke emphasised.

Prior to this, the Transport Minister also committed to start publicly naming transport service providers with the highest number of traffic summonses as part of a crackdown spurred by a series of fatal road accidents that occurred in recent months.

Loke says this list will be published periodically, and should serve as a stern warning and deterrent against bus and logistics operators from going against regulations.
