- Kulai-Sedenak Upgrade Begins, 4KM Stretch Opens By 2026
Motorists using the North-South Expressway (PLUS) can look forward to a smoother drive soon, with a four-kilometre stretch from Kulai to Sedenak set to open in phases as early as next year.
This forms part of Phase 1, Package 1 of the highway widening project which is a 14-kilometre upgrade costing RM249 million, aimed at easing congestion along one of the country’s busiest routes.
“Construction began on June 28 last year and is scheduled to be completed by June 28, 2027
“Currently, progress stands at 16.44%, slightly behind the projected 20.02%, with a 3.58% delay,” said Johor’s Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. He added that the state government has held discussions with LLM, PLUS Malaysia Berhad, and contractors to get the project back on track by September.
Meanwhile, Phase 1, Package 2 which is a seven-kilometre stretch from Sedenak to Simpang Renggam began on June 22 with a budget of RM160 million, and is currently in its early stages. Completion is expected by December 22, 2027.
Phase 2, which spans 16 kilometres from Simpang Renggam to Machap, officially kicks off July 27, following the appointment of the main contractor on July 1. With a cost of RM439 million, this phase is targeted for completion by July 27, 2029.
The multibillion-ringgit widening effort is part of the Maju Johor 2030 agenda, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving traffic flow along the southern corridor, a critical artery for both commuters and logistics.
