Johor Steps Up Transport Upgrades Ahead Of Visit Johor 2026
Johor is ramping up efforts to improve its public transport system especially at key entry points to Singapore as the state gears up for Visit Johor 2026, StarMetro has reported.
With over 60,000 daily commuters travelling by bus across the border, the focus is on easing congestion at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI), Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB), and Larkin Sentral.
“This is a huge logistics challenge, but we’re making steady progress,” state works, transportation, infrastructure and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh told the news outlet.
Among the changes, according to Fazli, are shuttle buses at BSI now use dedicated lanes, reducing delays. Enforcement teams also monitor yellow boxes and loading bays to prevent blockages. Floor stickers and signage have been added to reduce confusion over queue lines and bus types.
To address early morning congestion, Johor has proposed to Singapore's LTA that cross-border buses start at 4am instead of 5am.
“People already queue from 4am. We need to match the demand," Fazli noted.
At Larkin Sentral, new arrival screens, speaker systems, and improved queue setups have been introduced, alongside RM2.5 million in physical upgrades including roofing, fencing, and better bus access lanes. The project is 52% complete and on track for completion by September.
In addition, Fazli says KSAB is also getting a makeover. New boarding lanes, real-time coordination by timekeepers, and priority access for seniors and disabled passengers are being enforced.
“If traffic is smooth, the trip to Tuas takes just 5 to 8 minutes,” he added.
Immigration tech is improving too. MyBorderPass facial recognition lanes are growing in popularity, with seven new lanes set to open at KSAB in August. E-gates and QR codes are also being tested to speed up car clearances.
Meanwhile, taxi drivers are getting a boost through an ad initiative where they can earn RM200 monthly.
Keep your cars clean, give good service, you’re the face of Johor,” Fazli told them.
He said these are long-term changes aimed at supporting both tourism and daily commuters, adding that the state is laying the groundwork now to create a smoother, more welcoming Johor by 2026.
