- Tow Truck Operator Charged Over Viral PLUS Highway Blockade
A tow truck driver has pleaded not guilty to blocking traffic on the North-South Expressway near the Pedas-Linggi toll plaza in Negeri Sembilan earlier this month.
R. Suren, 36, was charged with reckless driving for stopping his vehicle in the middle of the southbound lane at KM225.5 around 7.50pm on July 1. The offence, under Section 279 of the Penal Code, carries a sentence of up to six months in jail, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
Suren and two unidentified individuals were also charged with wrongfully restraining a motorist, Ang Wei Foong, by blocking his car at the same spot.
This charge, under Section 341, is punishable by up to one month in jail or a RM1,000 fine.
The court allowed Suren bail of RM3,000 and fixed September 9 for mention.
Ang was also charged with reckless driving for allegedly going against traffic flow during the same incident. He pleaded not guilty and was released on RM2,000 bail.
The case gained attention after a video of the highway blockade went viral. Police later arrested one of the car owners, believed to be a towing agent in his 50s, in Seremban.
Rembau police chief Hasani Hussain said the suspects were believed to have stopped traffic to tow a vehicle without proper precautions.
“Their actions endangered other drivers and could have caused a fatal accident,” he said.
