- Hybrid Demand Lifts Toyota To New Sales Record In 2025
Toyota has started 2025 on a high, posting record global sales in the first half of the year even as new US tariffs cast a shadow over the auto industry.
Strong demand for hybrids in major markets like the US, Japan, and China helped the carmaker push through the uncertainty.
From January to June, Toyota along with subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino sold more than 5.5 million vehicles worldwide, a 7.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
Production also rose 8.8%, thanks to a major boost in domestic output.
This is because American car buyers are rushing to complete purchases before a 25% import tax kicked in under President Donald Trump’s trade policy.
That initial panic has since eased slightly. A new trade deal revised the tariff rate to 15%, still steep, but less damaging than feared.
The Japanese carmaker, which stood to lose the most under the original terms, said it’s hopeful that US-Japan trade ties will improve and called for further easing of restrictions.
In June alone, Toyota moved over 937,000 vehicles globally, a 2.7% increase from the previous year. Production for the month climbed 7.7%.
While hybrids continue to drive growth for Toyota, the company knows the EV race is heating up.
Tesla and China’s BYD are expanding fast. Toyota has sold about 82,000 battery EVs so far this year with most of them outside Japan.
For now, the world’s largest automaker’s mix of hybrid strength and global reach seems to be working even in a changing, high-stakes market.
