- Parking Solutions Being Studied For Future Seri Kembangan Market
Plans are underway to tackle the parking crunch near the upcoming Seri Kembangan market, with a consultant appointed to study options for additional parking around Jalan Pasar, Kampung Baru Seri Kembangan, The Star has reported.
Puchong DAP Youth deputy chief and MBSJ Zone 22 councillor Tey Boon Kiat said the study was aimed at ensuring enough parking is available once the new market building opens.
“The current design has roughly 80 bays, but we know that won’t be enough, especially on market days,” he said.
Tey explained that part of the study includes looking at Dewan Serbaguna Seri Kembangan, a multipurpose hall about 230m from the old market site, to see if its grounds could be upgraded to support more parking.
“We are working with the consultant to survey available land and assess if the hall space can be modified to create more parking. If it’s feasible, we will propose it as a separate infrastructure project with its own funding and timeline,” he added.
Parking woes have worsened since April 2023 when traders were relocated to a temporary site along Jalan SK6/1. The old 0.28ha car park on Jalan SK10/3 remains fenced up for a planned three-storey commercial development.
Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki previously said that design and technical approvals for the new market are complete, with construction targeted to begin by late 2025.
“The market rebuild will take two years, and we aim to have it ready by the end of 2027,” she said, adding that all 196 licensed traders currently operating at the temporary site will be accommodated at the new market.
Wong also noted that future stall allocations will follow MBSJ licensing rules and that the council is reviewing licences that are either inactive or sublet.
