- KTMB and SRT Trials MySawasdee Cross-Border Tourist Train
Malaysia and Thailand have taken another step towards closer cross-border rail links with the successful trial of the “MySawasdee” tourist train. The test run, jointly carried out by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), is part of preparations for the service’s full launch by the end of 2025.
The three–day trial, held from Sept 21 to 23 between Padang Besar and Surat Thani, was aimed at ironing out technical details. According to Bernama, SRT governor Veeris Ammarapala said the checks included platform clearance, coach dimensions, wheel spacing and braking systems, all critical to ensuring the service meets safety standards.
As part of the next phase, KTMB will run a three–car test train between Bangkok and Padang Besar to further fine–tune operations before regular trips begin.
Veeris said the new service would give travellers a fresh way to experience the journey between the two countries, while opening up more choices for tourism and trade. He added that the project is expected to generate new economic opportunities and strengthen cultural and social connections.
At present, the MySawasdee service runs on select holidays between Kuala Lumpur and Hatyai. Its expansion further north into Thailand marks a significant push to grow rail tourism and deepen regional connectivity.
