Previewed: 2025 VW Golf R-Line Mk 8.5 – New 1.5L eTSI MHEV Engine, 150 PS

Previewed alongside the new Golf GTI Mk 8.5 is the upcoming VW Golf R-Line variant with a new eTSI mild hybrid engine.
Previewed alongside the all-new 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8.5 is a second variant of the facelifted Golf Mk 8.5 in Malaysia, the Volkswagen Golf R Line eTSI. As its name suggests, this new entry-level variant marks the return of the R-Line model for the Golf in Malaysia, with the latest facelift version featuring a new eTSI mild hybrid (MHEV) powertrain setup.

The new MHEV powertrain for the Golf R-Line Mk 8.5 uses a 1.5-litre eTSI turbocharged petrol engine that is mated to a 48-volt belt starter-generator (BSG) to deliver a combined output of 150 PS and 250 Nm. And just like the previous Golf TSI, the MHEV engine is still mated to the same 7-speed DSG transmission that propels the hatch from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds.
Besides better power, Volkswagen also claims the new eTSI MHEV setup delivers better fuel efficiency over the previous non-MHEV version with a claimed fuel consumption rate of 5.2 litres per 100 km.

On the visual front, the new Golf R-Line Mk 8.5 gets a slew of R-Line specifications aside from the visual changes given to the facelift model. Some key R-Line parts present here include the R-Line front bumper design with a radiator grille, a sporty R-Line rear bumper with dual chromed exhaust tips, R-Line side skirts, and 17-inch ‘Coventry’ alloy wheels.
Similar to its GTI twin, a total of five exterior colourways will be offered to the R-Line model, including Oryx White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black, Kings Red, and Anemone Blue.

The R-Line treatment continues inside the cabin, where the eTSI model features specific R-Line bits and pieces like the R-Line black headliner, R-Line brushed stainless steel foot pedals, R-Line leather-wrapped steering wheel with physical buttons, R-Line Carbon Grey trim on the dash and front door panels, plus R-Line fabric upholstery for the front sport seats and the outer rear seats.

Other cabin amenities primed here are largely carried over from the GTI model, which includes the 12.9-inch central infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10-inch TFT metre cluster with multiple colour themes, an Air Care Climatronic 3-zone auto A/C system, illuminated touch sliders for both the A/C and volume controls, a wireless charger, and many more.
Safety features for the Golf R-Line Mk 8.5 also mirror those of its sportier GTI twin, with key ADAS functions primed here including Auto Emergency Braking (AEB) Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Travel Assist, Rear Traffic Alert and Exit Warning, Park Distance Control, Driver Attention Detection, and Emergency, Side, and Lane Assist.

As of now, Volkswagen Passenger Car Malaysia (VPCM) has yet to confirm both the price and the launch date for the new Golf R-Line eTSI, although the automaker did confirm that it will be locally-assembled (CKD) alongside the GTI at the Volkswagen Pekan plant. For reference, the pre-facelift Golf R-Line Mk 8, which was also a CKD offering, was retailing at RM170,560, so we can expect the eTSI facelift model to fetch higher premiums than its predecessor.
