KTM is expanding its rail network in Johor with the new Komuter Selatan, set to begin operations in Feb, a month after the Electric Train Service (ETS) starts.

The move aims to ease traffic congestion and give commuters a faster, more reliable alternative to driving, according to Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

“Once launched, Komuter Selatan, running 25 km from Johor Bahru Sentral to Kulai, is expected to cut peak-hour travel time from one hour by car to just 30 minutes by train

"Ticket prices are expected to stay under RM3, making it an affordable option for daily commuters," he added.

The service will run 32 trips daily, with each train carrying up to 400 passengers. To kick things off quickly, temporary stations will be set up at Taman Daya, Bandar Seri Alam, and Kampung Pasir Putih within six months, with full upgrades planned next year.

Fazli also suggested opening passenger services on the single-track Kempas Baru–Pasir Gudang line, currently used only for freight.

“The 25-km route takes only 30 minutes by train, compared with over an hour by car during peak hours. We see strong potential in opening passenger services on the Kempas-Pasir Gudang line.

The track is not fully utilised for cargo right now, so those available windows can be used for commuters,” he noted. Four round trips a day are being proposed, with fares expected to remain below RM3.

“Some adjustments will need to be done at the Pasir Gudang station in order for the proposed commuter line to operate, as it currently only handles freight. I have brought this up with the transport ministry and they have agreed to conduct a site inspection soon,” Fazli stressed.
