Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4MATIC SUV

The latest addition to Mercedes-Benz’s EQ portfolio, expanding the EQS SUV line-up, the new EQS 450 4MATIC SUV, launched in Malaysia.

A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the model underpins the German automaker’s Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA2) platform, and is positioned under the EQS 580 4MATIC SUV.

Fully-imported (CBU - United States), the base-range variant (EQS 450 4MATIC SUV) retails (OTR, w/o insurance) at MYR 625,888.

Included is a vehicle warranty (four years/unlimited-mileage), and a main drive battery warranty (10 years/250,000 KM).

The new EQS 450 4MATIC SUV has a cascading-tiered dashboard design, linked to a high-rising centre console (deleted gear-shifter, retractable-cover stowage).

Blessed with the Electric Art Line Interior kit, the layout is draped in dual-tone (Black-Balao Brown) soft-/hard-touch panels (dash, centre console, door beltlines).

Nappa (Black-Balao Brown) ARTICO man-made leather upholstery, with Open-Pore Magnolia Wood (Brown) and Mercedes-Benz pattern (Aluminium) trimmings.

Centre-staged is the single pane Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen (56-Inch display - driver, centre, passenger).

Accentuating the layout are ambient lights (Light and Sight Package - active, 64-colour), and air-conditioning vents (Metallised - turbine-designed corners, slim-band top).

Overall, the build is well-designed, with accessibilities strategically-arranged (driver-centric, passenger-oriented).

Featuring 1/3 of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen multimedia system (third-generation NTG 7), installed is a 12.3-Inch fully-digital driver display with an Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Up Display (HUD - 77-Inch).

Features are three display styles (Classic, Sporty, Discreet), multiple interfaces (drive modes, vehicle settings), and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service).

Luxurious, the seven-seater (layout - 2-3-2) continues the Electric Art Line Interior kit. Two-tone (Black-Balao Brown) Nappa ARTICO man-made leather upholstery.

Fitted are electric-powered (driver/passenger - multi-way/-contour, lumbar, memory, active climate) Comfort Seats (first-, second-row).

Weighing in at 2,840 KG, the new EQS 450 4MATIC SUV stands at 5,125 MM long, 2,157 MM wide, 1,718 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 3,210 MM.

Commandingly-elegant, its exterior parades the typical EQ styling with clean-cut and seamlessly-jointed surfaces.

The front-end sees Merc’s bonnet (power domes), rounded quarter panels, a covered radiator grille, and a vented bumper.

Fitted is the AMG Line Exterior kit, featuring a panelled grille (Black, Mercedes-Benz pattern, light strip), and an AMG bumper (corner/centre vents, Black trims).

Curvaceously-sculpted, its silhouette continues the typical EQ styling with roundly-cut and smoothly-shaped surfaces.

The rear-end sees a straight roofline (Black), a roof-edge spoiler (D-pillar flowing), muscular quarter panels, and a bulbous tailgate/bumper.

Fitted is the AMG Line Exterior kit, featuring an AMG bumper (Black - full-covered bumper/Chrome - slim diffuser, corner slit-like vents).

Accentuations are claddings (Black - fenders, side sills, side mirror arms/Chrome - side window trims), and running boards (Aluminium - illuminated, rubber studs).

Sharply-elongated, the headlamps are housed inward-tilted, with a connecting light strip. Installed are Digital Light LED units.

Roundly-flowing, the tail lamps are in a light bar design, full-width and slim with wrapped-around edges. Installed are full LED units (3D Helix light graphics).

The new EQS 450 4MATIC SUV harbours an all-electric powertrain.

Nestled are Permanently-Excited Synchronous Motors (PSM), a dual-electric-motor setup (front-rear-mounted), generating 265 KW (360 HP) and 800 NM.

Churning the system is a single-speed fixed ratio automatic transmission.

The electric drivetrain (eATS) transmits power to all four wheels (4WD), via Mercedes’ fully-variable 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, featuring a Torque Shift function and rear-axle steering.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 KM/H is done in 6.1 seconds, and the top speed is 210 KM/H.

Juicing-up the e-motors is a Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery pack (118 KWH - boot-floor-mounted), enabling between 594 KM to 673 KM of driving range (WLTP).

Charging via AC (22 KW - Type 2), takes 6.25 hours for a 0% to 100% State of Charge (SoC). Charging via DC (200 KW - CCS2), takes 31 minutes for a 10% to 80% SoC.

Included are charging cables (5.0 M - wallbox, public charging station).

The latter controls the level of the vehicle to vary in line with the speed, which in turn increases the range when driving fast.

Notably, its ground clearance is 25 MM raisable at speeds of up to 80 KM/H, while in Comfort and Sport modes, it is automatically lowered by 10 MM and 15 MM, respectively.

The vehicle delivers a high-power density, high efficiency and high-power reliability. Ultimately, it has superior roadholding, great handling stability and agility at high speeds.

Good sound insulation with the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects accounted for. The build is acoustically designed to enhance the in-car ambience.

Part of the aero-acoustic measures used is the installation of heat-, noise-insulating and infrared-reflecting acoustic laminated glass (Acoustic Comfort Package).

Overall, the cabin is able to suppress unwanted noises well and make them barely noticeable, in most of the day-to-day driving environment.
