Mini Cooper Convertible

Expanding its line-up with the return of a highly adored model, the new MINI Cooper Convertible, officially launched in Malaysia.

The 4th-generation (F67) compact hatchback (A-segment) underpins an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) powertrain and the UKL1 architecture (BMW-sourced).

Fully imported (CBU – UK), available via MINI Malaysia (BMW Group Malaysia) is one variant (Cooper S Convertible – MYR 318,888).

Price (OTR, w/o insurance) covers a standard warranty (two years, unlimited mileage), and a Roadside Assistance program (five years).

Optional (MYR 10,400) is a MINI extended warranty (four years, unlimited mileage) and service package (free – four years/60,000 KM).

Three (dual-tone: convertible/soft top roof – Black) exterior colours (Cooper Grey, Sunny Side Yellow, Ocean Wave Green). One (dual-tone: panels – seats) interior colour (Black-Blue – Nightshade Blue).

The new Cooper Convertible gets a minimalistic and slim dashboard design, linked to a low-rise-wide-two-level centre console (storage, wireless charger).

Favoured Trim outfitted, it sees soft-/hard-touch panels (dash, centre console, doors) in dual-tone (Black-Blue) 2D-knitted fabric (Houndstooth) upholstery.

Filling-up the spaces are a floating circular central screen display (MINI Round Display – instrument cluster, infotainment) and roundly rectangular air-conditioning vents.

Unique, depending on the drive modes (MINI Experience Modes) selected, the setup features a light projector (Beamer) displaying patterns onto the dash.

Inclusively, the layout is airy and non-cluttered, with accessibilities ergonomically arranged (driver-centric, passenger-oriented).

A dual-functioning (instrument cluster/infotainment) floating-circular central display (MINI Interaction Unit – MINI OLED Round display), installed is a 9.4-Inch OLED touchscreen, incorporating a MINI Head-Up Display (HUD).

Running on the MINI Operating System 9 (MINI OS 9 – Android), it supports MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant (voice control system – ‘Hey MINI’ – MINI/Spike – MINI avatar), MINI Navigation AR, MINI Experience Modes (Core, Go-Kart, Green, Vivid, Timeless, Balance, Personal, Trail), MINI Always Open Timer (top down driving time tracker) and MINI App (MINI Digital Key Plus – remote control – smartphone).

Premium, the interior continues the Favoured Trim treatment, featuring leatherette (Vescin beading/cord) upholstery (seats) in one colour scheme (Nightshade Blue).

The front gets electric-powered (driver/passenger – multi-way, massage, lumbar, driver-memory) JCW (John Cooper Works) sport seats. The rear comes with a manual-operated (two-seater: 60:40 split-fold) bolstered bench. 

Included are armrests (front – centre console, rear – centre fold-out), ambient lights (multi-colour – MINI Experience Modes), an anthracite headliner (Black), a convertible/soft top roof (electric-Z-folding – 18 secs open, 15 secs close, 30 KM/H operable speed, sunroof mode: 40 CM open) and wind deflector.

A compact four-seater (two-door) hatchback, the cabin offers adequate space, providing ample interior mobility for the occupants (front, rear).

Mounted is a three-spoke sport steering wheel (Favoured Trim), wrapped in leather (Vescin – Black) and fabric (Houndstooth – lower spoke).

Drive is aided by an Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system.

Weighing in at 1,380 KG, the new Cooper Convertible measures at 3,879 MM long, 1,970 MM wide, 1,431 MM tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,495 MM.

Dynamically sculpted, it parades a seamlessly rounded exterior, emphasised by clean lines, smooth surfaces and balanced proportions.

The front-end sees a clamshell bonnet (‘MINI’ emblem), an octagonal grille (‘S’ emblem, Vibrant Silver surround) and a rounded bumper (vented).

Outfitted is the Favoured Trim, featuring body contrasting accents (Piano Black – grille inserts, headlamp/window surrounds, side mirrors, A-pillars).

Accentuations, body clad (Black – bumper, fenders, side sills), ‘MINI’/‘S’ (Black-Chrome/Red) emblems and a convertible/soft top roof (Black – Union Jack graphic).

Smoothly athletic, it continues the seamlessly rounded profile, emphasised by horizontally rounded and clean-cut shapes.

The rear-end sees a sleekly defined tailgate (‘MINI’ emblem, ‘Cooper S’ script), rounded quarter panels and a covered bumper (hidden exhaust).

Outfitted is the Favoured Trim, featuring body contrasting accents (Piano Black – tail lamp/window surrounds, tailgate centre bar).

Accentuations, body clad (Black – bumper, fenders, side sills), ‘MINI’/‘Cooper S’ (Black-Chrome/Chrome-Red) emblem/script and a convertible/soft top roof (Black – Union Jack graphic).

Circularly framed with darkened internals, the headlamps are iconic posing as key features to the MINI face. Installed are Bi-LED units.

Features are automatic On/Off/rain-sensing, adaptive beams (low/high), perimeter Daytime Running Lights (DRL – LED), cornering/welcome lights, High-Beam Assist (HBA), customisable lighting function (three light signatures) and turn signals (LED).

Vertically rounded with darkened perimeters and MINI’s Union Jack light graphic, the tail lamps are iconic of the MINI. Installed are full LED units.

Features are automatic On/Off, turn signals (LED), welcome lights and customisable lighting function (three light signatures).

The side mirrors (single-tone – Piano Black) are electric-powered (auto-fold, adjust, tilt).

Installed are ventilated (front) and solid (rear) disc brakes.

Exclusive, it cruises on a set of 18-Inch multi-spoke (Night Flash) dual-tone (Silver-Black) aluminium-alloy rims.

The new Cooper Convertible features the ‘MINI Driving Assistant’ suite of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).

Grouped are Cruise Control (CC) with Braking, Lane Change Warning (LCW) with Active Return, Rear Cross Traffic Warning (RCTW) with Brake Intervention, Rear Collision Prevention (RCP), Exit Warning (EW), Park Assist (Reversing Assistant, Lateral Parking Aid, Surround View System – 360-degree camera, Remote 3D-view – MINI App), Driving Assistant Plus (Active Cruise Control with Stop/Go, Steering/Lane Control Assistant, Speed Limit Info, Automatic Speed Limit), Attentiveness Assistant and High-Beam Assistant (HBA).

The new Cooper Convertible harbours an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE – Petrol) powertrain.

Featured is a 2.0-Litre in-line four-cylinder 16-valve direct-fuel injection turbocharged petrol engine (B48), producing 201 HP (150 KW) and 300 NM.

Fused to the mill is a seven-speed Steptronic Sport DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) automatic transmission.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels, via a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) system.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 KM/H takes 6.9 seconds and top speed is 237 KM/H.

Fuel tank capacity is at 44-Litres, and the fuel consumption figure is 6.6 – 6.5 L/100 KM (WLTP).

Propping-up the chassis (Passive Sports Suspension) are MacPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear) suspensions, incorporating twin-tube gas-filled pressure dampers.

Overall solid, refined and agile (low-centre gravity), the ride quality is MINI (Go-Kart experience), and the powertrain offers a wonderfully smooth power delivery.

Good sound insulation, with all the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects accounted for. 

The cabin is able to suppress wind, road and tyre noises well, making them barely noticeable at all speeds, even when cruising through bumpy asphalts.
