Corruption Issues During Driving Tests, MOT Studies The Use Of Sensors And Cameras

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is conducting a study to test the feasibility of using the latest technology in driving tests to combat corruption issues that interfere with test integrity.

According to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, applying technology such as sensors and cameras can improve the learning process and increase the level of integrity of tests conducted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

"For example, if a person takes a test with JPJ, we will put them in a vehicle that not only has a video camera for recording but also sensors will be placed in the car that is used during this test.

"Once at the circuit, all parking poles will be fitted with cameras and sensors to see the integrity that was questioned beforehand, where we can bribe the officers during the test," he said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat here today.

He added that using this modern application, such as recordings made through the camera, can be displayed again to resolve corruption in the testing process.

"The need for automation during the recording of any test elements which can be revisited when there are allegations can also be resolved with the help of the technology."

"It requires big data analysis as well as the use of sophisticated sensors including the use of the 'Internet of things (IoT)'," he said again.

In other developments, Dr Wee Ka Siong also shared that the Ministry of Transport was working to help about 462,000 candidates affected by the closure of driving institutes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and had to postpone the process of obtaining licenses and driving tests.

In this regard, the government granted an extension of renewal for Learned Driving Licenses (LDL), which has expired for more than two years, from January 13 to June 30 2022. This gave driving institutions time to re-arrange testing slots with JPJ and to comply with the government-set SOPs.
