Rivian R2 - Here Are More Details About Rivian's Next All-New EV
Rivian is currently organising production for its all-electric R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and Amazon delivery vehicles, all of which have struggled to maintain full capacity.
Rivian has revealed more information about its upcoming "R2" platform of new vehicles, which will most likely be priced and marketed as more affordable options in the company lineup.
Rivian says the R2 will be the next step to expand the brand portfolio "globally across different price points and form factors," but the letter does not go into further detail on what shape the R2 platform could take—only that it will be critical to Rivian's long-term success.
According to MotorTrend, the R2 platform will be scaled down and designed for a range of smaller vehicles, including trucks and SUVs. The R2 lineup will almost certainly have dual- and tri-motor drivetrain configurations, but will not have the quad-motor setup found in the larger, beefier R1 platform that underpins the R1T and R1S. It's unclear which platform other rumoured vehicles, such as a sportier Jeep Wrangler competitor, will use.
Rivian claims it is prepared to increase production capacity to 150,000 units per year in the future, which remains the company's top priority. According to Rivian, the Normal, Illinois production facility has demonstrated its ability to operate at full capacity during "burst build activities," and is now reportedly only limited by supply chain support in the global market.
On top of Amazon's order of 100,000 delivery vans, the startup claims it has received over 90,000 preorders for its R1T and R1S pickup and SUV models. Rivian hasn't said when the first new vehicle based on the R2 platform will be available, but it could be by the end of next year.
