Rivian Patents Air Conditioned EV Charger - Faster Charging Speed
The achilles heel in all EV charging scenarios are always on how to maintain a constant ideal temperature for the best charging performance. Well it seems now, Rivian has found an answer and patented it furthermore.
EVs predominantly during high powered DC charging situations will begin to generate massive amounts of heat requiring the vehicles battery cooling system to work towards keeping the build up of heat at bay. That is also the reason why DC charging speed always is throttled down past midway to keep temperatures at bay.
With Rivian's patented solution, they are claiming to be able to run the charger at high and still be able to modulate the vehicles cooling/heating. The successful roll out of this technology would be a game changer helping to maintain a stable charging temperature hence increasing the charging speeds, battery longevity and mitigate fire risk while charging.
Now for the best part, this patented tech is such a simple solution, it requires no design update to the vehicles battery temperature management system. Based on the patent image we can see that the solution from Rivian is pretty much a simple air-blower that blows air towards the vehicle's cooling system to aid the existing in-vehicle battery cooling.
Now although the patent is filed and its intent is clear, there is no official word from Rivian on how much faster the charger is able to run. But by the look of things and the need for a patent on it, we are pretty sure this would prove to be a game changer when rolled out. Moreover, it is high time other EV charging providers take heed and invest in finding solutions in speeding up charging time safely to make EV adoption seamless for everyone.
