New Mini Concept Aceman electric crossover previews brand’s design future

Meet the MINI Concept Aceman, the BMW-owned British marque’s latest and newest concept electric crossover SUV that sports a very distinct styling. Mini says this concept stands as a preview of its future design direction, describing it as the "beginning of a new design period."

The Aceman concept is built upon a stretched version of the all-new Spotlight architecture developed jointly by parent company BMW and Chinese partner Great Wall. It will form the basis for the next-generation electric Mini hatchback, and we’ll likely see this concept evolve into a production model that goes on sale in 2024.

Mini claims that the Aceman is a real crossover, not simply a shorter SUV. It's a true hybrid of the Hatch and the Countryman, and it promises the agility of the former with the size and lifestyle-oriented practicalities of the latter.

To put the Concept Aceman’s size into perspective, it measures 4.05 metres long, 1.99 metres wide, and 1.59 metres tall. In contrast, the contemporary Mini Countryman is 4.31 metres long and 2 metres wide.

The Mini Concept Aceman sports four doors and a huge boot lid, with space for five on board. Key exterior traits include bodywork surrounds, firmly shaped wheel arches, 20-inch wheels, a distinctive roof rack, front and rear valance sections fashioned as underride protection.

Inside, designers have taken inspiration from the 1959 original penned by Sir Alec Issigonis, which see the reintroduction of a bare dash plus a single central speedo. Mini also injected some levity through cool LED visuals and a clever infotainment unit that curates an experience for passengers.

Said infotainment system is based on the current Mini Operating System, which is built for the first time on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack.

In addition to the zero-emission environmental benefits of its electric powertrain, Mini claims that the Aceman is made up of "high-quality materials selected with a conscientious eye on sustainability."

Apart from this, Mini did not specify details surrounding the Aceman’s powertrain. However, the brand’s Spotlight platform-based EV hatchback will reportedly come in a 181 HP Cooper form  with an approximately 40kWh battery pack, followed by a peppier 221 HP Cooper S above which that sports a 50kWh battery pack, giving a range of around 402 KM (250 miles). Expect the production version of the Aceman to be broadly similar.

The Aceman will make its first public debut at the Gamescom gaming expo in Cologne in late August, rather than during a conventional launch.
