Chery Marks its Malaysian Return with OMODA 5 and Tiggo Pro SUVs

In this competitive local market space, car brands often come and go. Few ever return, and even fewer came back better and stronger than before. And Chery, might be one of the few, yet.

Chery has officially made its highly-anticipated return to Malaysian soil with today’s physical preview of its latest offerings – headlined by the all-new OMODA 5. Other models previewed are the Tiggo Pro line-ups, including the Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, regular 8 Pro, 7 Pro as well as the 4 Pro.
Chery Malaysia’s boss, Leo Chen stated that today’s event is “significant for several reasons”, first for being the marque’s first physical engagement under the new roof and secondly marking the debut for Chery’s latest ongoing models mentioned earlier.

“This preview event will strengthen the market research we have done so far by allowing us to gather extensive feedback from our valued guests via survey, this time alongside the real vehicles. This feedback will greatly help us fine-tune our products and brand strategy to best serve the Malaysian market, as well as assess the suitability of each of these models for the market,” he added.

The headliner OMODA 5 – first-time previewed outside of China – boasts an aggressive and futuristic styling that is set to entice younger audiences. All three of OMODA variants come with either a 1.5 L TCI engine plus CVT transmission or a bigger 1.6 TGDI engine paired with a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. The range-topper spec will feature the bigger 1.6 powertrain plus an exclusive all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration.

Additional key features of this 5-seater crossover include Chery’s latest Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), 360° camera display as well as seamless 20.5-inch dual screen infotainment display with intelligent voice commands, Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity built in.

The Tiggo Pro line-up offers a wide range of SUVs in multiple sizes, showcasing Chery’s latest design language coupled with latest technology features inside. The Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV – making its ASEAN debut today – is a seven-seater hybrid crossover that comes with proprietary Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) consisting of dual electric motors that works along its petrol-powered 1.5 L ICE.

Said dual electric motor allows the 8 Pro to run fully-electric, with a limited range of 80 KM, Chery claims. The ICE-electric motor combo produces 241 HP and 510 NM of torque – accelerating this family SUV from 0 to 100 KM/H in 8.2 seconds.

Extra techy bits such as massive 24.6-inch dual screen setup, electric tailgate, wireless charger and aforementioned built-in ADAS transform this car from ordinary people-mover to a tech-laden crossover.

Next in the Pro line is the Tiggo 7 Pro – an ideal choice for a family of five with its five-seat configuration. This SUV is offered with similar powertrain options as the OMODA 5 – namely the 1.5 L TCI plus CVT and 1.6 L TGDI plus DCT. Minus the third-row seat, the 7 Pro (the car, not the phone) struck as the sportier, more rugged version of the 8 Pro, yet still retains its family-friendly reputation.

Finally, this preview wraps itself up with the Tiggo 4 Pro – the smallest among the bunch. Being a compact crossover, this car is poised to be Chery’s secret weapon against the local’s hottest compact crossover, the Perodua Ativa. Its smaller configuration not only makes the 4 Pro a budget-friendly option, but also a capable urban-dwelling vessel.
