BeyonCa EV Marks Global Debut with GT Opus 1 Concept

As a global EV batteries manufacturing hub, China is now brimmed with budding EV start-ups. However, only few managed to go beyond domestic, while others either didn't venture beyond the republic’s Great Wall or worse – tank and disappear into obscurity.

The latest to announce itself with a global debut is the BeyonCa (short for ‘Beyond the Car’) EV brand. From a glimpse, BeyonCa seems like yet another EV start-up sprouting out of the booming EV industry in mainland China.
What sets BeyonCa apart from other out-of-water EV brands with literally zero experience is that the brand is headed by some former Volkswagen execs – bringing their years of auto industry experience and expertise in the current EV game.

One of the brand’s co-founders is Singaporean Soh Weiming. Currently CEO of Renault China, the exec boasts 16 years of experience having worked at Volkswagen China prior. Soh is joined at BeyonCa with former VW board member Christian Klinger, ex VW R&D boss Hans-Joachim Rotenpieler, and former Bentley design head Dirk van Braeckel.

BeyonCa’s debutant model, the GT Opus 1, is set to go against the likes of Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S in the premium EV segment. This EV saloon features a distinct arrow-like front bumper design, flanked by a pair of thin LED headlights.
Powering this concept EV is a 130 kWh-rated power plant, consisting of both CTP (cell-to-pack) and CTC (cell-to-chassis) battery cell construction. Details on its drivetrain and related performance specs are yet to be disclosed at the time of writing.

Boasting a muscular and wide shoulder line, the GT Opus 1 houses massive wheels and curved roofline – thus making the four-door saloon look like a two-door sports coupe. Its short rear-end comes with a small rear spoiler. Measuring at about 5,200 MM long, this concept sits longer than its German adversary, the Porsche Taycan (4,963 MM).
What separates the GT Opus 1 against other premium EVs is the inclusion of AI-based medical emergency features. Included are blood pressure monitor sensors and medical emergency service alerts. With these, the car can detect the driver’s blood pressure and alert medical emergency service when required. Coupled with the car’s autonomous driving tech, it can either slow down or stop itself should an emergency occur.

Headquartered in Beijing, China, with its in-house design team based in Munich, Germany, and Artificial Intelligence research hub in Singapore, BeyonCa claims to have the financial backing from Wuhan-based Changjiang Capital. With its current investments, reportedly rated at RMB10 billion (RM6.5 billion), Dongfeng Motor, Renault’s Chinese partner, is also said to be one of the brand’s stakeholders – aside from being in charge of manufacturing the production version of the GT Opus 1 concept.
The production-bound GT Opus 1 concept, dubbed as the Opus 1, is poised for a special preview at the upcoming 2023 Shanghai Motor Show. Following the Opus 1’s preview and eventual market release, BeyonCa also plans to release three to five more models in subsequent years following which – all poised for both domestic and international markets.
So, what are your thoughts on this brand-new Chinese EV start-up? Does it have enough substance and expertise to survive and thrive unlike many of its counterparts? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below…
