Beam Malaysia Records Over 1 Million E-Scooter Rides in 2022!

Walking around the streets of Malaysian cities like Kuala Lumpur can be quite a hassle, thanks to the capital’s hot and humid climate, as well as unpredictable weather. At times it can even be quite dangerous too, considering the car-centric infrastructures dominating the city centre.

Fortunately, the advanced micro-mobility options like e-scooter provides alternatives for pedestrians to get around the bustling city much easier. Thanks to its convenience, the e-scooter popularity has skyrocketed nowadays, and such rise can be observed in the annual total ridership of micro-mobility service providers like Beam.

Beam Mobility, one of Malaysia’s biggest micro-mobility companies, has recorded its highest-ever annual ridership of over 1.1 million e-scooter rides by over 200,000 people in 2022 alone. This record also sees several increases in specific operating areas, as well as new records in terms of riders, e-scooter deployments and more.
Commenting on its unprecedented success, Beam Malaysia’s general manager Justin Tiew said, “The data clearly shows that an increasing number of Malaysians are more accepting of shared e-scooters as a real mode of transport. I would like to thank all our riders for the constant support and constructive feedback over the past year.”

Bulk of the 1.1 million rides recorded this year stems from trips in and out of public transportation facilities like MRT, LRT or bus stations – amounting to more than 100,000 from said total figure. This also marks a five times (5x) increase of said trips compared to the previous years where pandemic lockdowns were still being enforced.
In terms of new users, Beam has recorded over 80,000 new sign-ups – a good 65% higher than the previous year, 2021.

For the e-scooter deployments, more than 3,500 e-scooters are deployed all over key regions around Peninsula Malaysia such as Pahang, Perak, Penang, Johor and Klang Valley. Densely populated neighbourhoods in Klang Valley like Mont Kiara and Bandar Utama benefited the most from this fleet expansion.

In total, Beam’s e-scooters have travelled more than 2 million KM in 2022, with Kuala Lumpur ridership alone contributing more than half of the total distance, at 1.3 million KM. This feat also has prevented more than 486 tonnes of carbon emission, should the same distance be covered by cars.
For the year 2023, Beam Malaysia looks forward to working with more city councils around the country who share the same vision of achieving a low carbon city through smart and clean micro-mobility.
