The Honda Sensing suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) has gotten a big boost with the revelation of its next generation iteration this week. Called the Honda Sensing 360 suite, it sees Honda taking greater steps forward in terms of safety and near-autonomous driving.
The core aim of Honda Sensing 360 is to cut the number of collisions involving Honda cars by half before 2030. Additionally, Honda is striving to equip all its new cars with some form of motorcycle detection, with aims of ensuring all its new models in ‘major markets’ feature Sensing 360, by 2030.
Evidently, the ‘major markets’ markets Honda were referring to includes both China and the US, with the former market being the first to see new Honda models primed with Honda Sensing 360 starting next year in 2023. Implementation of which in the US, as well as other markets worldwide, is set for 2024 onwards.
On top of the features already present in the current Honda Sensing package, Honda Sensing 360 will see the addition of:
- Autonomous emergency braking with expanded cross-traffic, pedestrian detection capabilities
- Front cross-traffic alert
- Active lane-change assist (blind-spot monitoring)
- Lane-change collision mitigation (blind-spot assist)
In turn, the addition of all the above will enable:
- Hands-free driving within highway lanes
- Hand-free lane changes
- Driver emergency support (to prevent accidents when a driver is incapacitated)
Exit warning
- Driver attention warning
- Emergency steering assist
Compared to the current Honda Sensing suite as found in things like the recently launched Civic e:HEV RS, or the City Hatchback e:HEV RS we just tested not too long ago, this upgraded Honda Sensing 360 suite will allow both hands-free driving on highways, and hands-free lane change.
Besides rolling out the Honda Sensing 360 suite, the Japanese automaker is also planning to develop a ‘flagship variaiton’ of said suite powered by Honda’s original Artificial Intelligence (AI). Christened as Sensing Elite, this will harness said AI to learn from experience and “increase its capability to recognise complex situations and handle more complex driving environments such as on non-expressways”.\
Through Honda Sensing Elite, Honda specifically wants to offer hands-free driving on traffic-choked roads that aren’t highways, autonomous valet parking, as well as hands-free driver assist on al highways.
Lastly, whilst Honda hasn’t confirmed with model in China will be the first to feature this upgraded Honda Sensing 360 suite, but all signs indicate that it will most likely be the next e:N series EV model.
