New Mercedes-AMG GT2 Racer Packs Over 700 HP!
While a new second generation AMG GT model is coming very soon, the folks over at Mercedes-AMG reckons the current model still has plenty to offer, especially for discerning ‘gentlemen’ racers with the means. This is evident following this week’s introduction of the new Mercedes-AMG GT2 racecar.
Meant to bridge the gap between the GT3- and GT4-spec Mercedes-AMG GT racer, the new GT2 stands as the most powerful homologated customer racecar ever offered by the division. Backing this claim up is the Afalterbach-based performance division’s signature hand-built 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 powerplant primed, which makes a whopping 707 HP.
There’s also a meaty 800 NM of torque available, with drive transmitted to the rear wheels via a 6-speed sequential racing transmission primed with an adjustable self-locking differential and steering-mounted paddle-shifters.
Yes, while this may be a slight reduction over the road-legal Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series’ 730 HP output, the GT2 doesn’t have much in terms of road car ancillaries and components to worry about. Much of which have been stripped to save weight, allowing the GT2 to tip the scales below 1,400 KG, even with the driver air conditioning unit present.
Part of the weight-savings too are the forged 18-inch centre-lock racing wheels the GT2 rolls on, which are shod with sticky 325/660 front and 325/705-18 rear slick tyres. Further weight was shed through the adoption of a driver safety cell, hood, 120-litre fuel tank, and several other parts made from lightweight carbon fibre.
The Mercedes-AMG GT2 also comes primed with a new full race aerodynamics kit that features a massive adjustable swan-neck rear wing. Swapped out too is the road car’s intelligent adaptive suspension hardware, now replaced with proper aluminium double wishbones front and aft plus adjustable anti-roll bars and shock absorbers.
Poised to rival against things like the Maserati MC20 GT2 in the GT2 European Series, the Mercedes-AMG GT2 goes on sale starting next year. Sprint races aside, Mercedes-AMG is also poised to organise an endurance test run, though no exact timeline for which was given.
Also, no price figure was mentioned, but the Mercedes-AMG GT2 is expected to command a significant price tag as how its GT3 and GT4 siblings do.
