Several locations in six Selangor districts have been identified as potential hotspots for traffic congestion during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.
The districts involved, according to acting Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk S. Sasikala Devi, are Sabak Bernam, North Klang, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Ampang Jaya, and Gombak.
"In Ampang Jaya, for example, it is along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), whereas in Gombak, it is at the Gombak toll plaza. We anticipate increased traffic as people from the Klang Valley return home for Chinese New Year "She stated.
DCP Sasikala Devi stated this to reporters on Monday after launching the state's Ops Selamat operation at the Gombak toll plaza (Jan 16).
She also stated that traffic on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak highway is expected to reach 171,000 vehicles during the festive season, which begins on Friday (Jan 20).
"It is an estimate of peak traffic based on a daily average of 100,000 vehicles. The volume of traffic on the highway will increase by 71% "She stated.
DCP Sasikala Devi went on to say that 828 police officers and personnel would be on duty during the Chinese New Year holiday.
According to DCP Sasikala Devi, accidents in the state are on the decline, with 2,810 accidents recorded during Ops Selamat held during the festive period last year compared to 4,184 accidents during the same period in 2020.
"During the same festive period last year, 21 fatal accidents were recorded, while 22 fatal accidents were recorded in 2020," she added.
DCP Sasikala Devi urged the public to drive cautiously and plan their trips.
"Get plenty of rest before embarking on your journey. Follow all traffic laws and regulations. Remember that the most important thing is to arrive safely at your destination "She went on to say.
