Tesla To Open U.S. Charging Network To All EVs

As the White House and billionaire Elon Musk seek to strengthen ties, Tesla Inc will open a portion of its US charging network to EVs from other companies.

According to the White House, all EV drivers will be able to access the stations via the Tesla app or website. Tesla will also have to make its data available to third-party apps, which means drivers won't have to download the Tesla app to use the chargers.

Tesla will also triple its network of Superchargers, which are manufactured in Buffalo, New York. Tesla's new charging stations will need to have at least one permanent, non-proprietary port to ensure access via the combined charging system that is now the standard for other EVs in order to be eligible for federal funding.

The collaboration to expand charger access comes on the heels of Biden administration investigations into the operation and marketing of Tesla's Autopilot system.

Tesla is one of 16 companies that will provide an additional 100,000 chargers to the US network. Other participants include Hertz Global Holdings Inc. and BP plc, as well as a group made up of General Motors Co, Pilot Company, and EVgo Inc.
