All KTM Stations To Be Equipped With Lifts - Ministry Of Transport
The Transport Ministry is in the process of installing lifts at KTM stations to make public transportation more accessible to the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities (OKU).
At the same time, Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that the ministry was looking into stations that needed to be upgraded or expanded to accommodate the growing number of passengers.
"If we want more people to use public transportation, we must improve the service.
"Congestion at the stations only occurs for a short period of time during peak hours. However, there are plans for us to upgrade, but this will take time, and we may seek assistance from the Railway Assets Corporation in this matter," he told reporters after inspecting the Bukit Mertajam KTM Station. Meanwhile, Loke stated that the increased train frequency for KTM Komuter Northern Sector trips since February 18 has resulted in an increase in the number of passengers using the service from 10,480 to 11,224 per day, a 7% increase. He stated that passengers in the northern sector and surrounding areas no longer have to wait long at the stations and can arrive up to an hour earlier.
"The Padang Besar-Butterworth Komuter timetable has been improved by increasing frequency from 60 minutes to 20 minutes during the morning peak hour and from 60 minutes to 30 minutes during the evening peak hour. "The frequency of the Padang Rengas-Butterworth-Padang route will be increased to 120 minutes during off-peak hours from 180 minutes previously. "This increases the number of trips for the Padang Besar-Butterworth-Padang Besar route from 26 to 36 trips per day, while it increases the number of trips for the Padang Rengas-Butterworth-Padang Rengas route from 12 to 16 trips per day," he said.
Loke stated that the North Sector KTM Komuter service improvement was able to meet the growing number of passengers who use the train to get around on a daily basis. "According to my observations today, many people from Kedah and Perlis work in Penang and prefer to travel by train.
"With the increased frequency and number of trips, more people will seek employment in Penang," he predicted.
