New Mitsubishi XRT Concept Bows, Previews Upcoming Triton Successor
As detailed prior, Japanese automaker Mitsubishi is set to introduce no less than 16 new models based on its latest ‘Challenge 2025’ mid-term plan. A successor to the Triton pick-up truck is amongst them, and we’re getting our first glimpse of which through the XRT Concept pictured.
The Mitsubishi XRT Concept headlines the Japanese tri-diamond marque’s display at this week’s 44th Bangkok International Motor Show 2023 (BIMS 2023) happening in Thailand. Though wrapped in a striking camouflaged dressing, there’s plenty to note still.
Despite being officially labelled as a concept, the truck appears to have all its production panels in place underneath its camo wrap. Like the current Triton, the concept bears a similar split headlight and boxy grille design whilst the taillights feature a fully blacked-out tint that blends with the body wrap.
Additionally, the concept is fitted with grippy mud-terrain tyres at all four corners, a tubular structure in the rear flatbed housing two spare tyres, a snorkel, side steps, and wide fender extensions. Aptly, all of these traits help towards giving this concept truck a very rugged, Dakar racer-like stance and appearance.
Originally detailed through its new product roadmap recently, the revamped mid-sized pick-up truck will feature what Mitsubishi dubs as a "next-generation diesel" powertrain. Some degree of electrification is expected, likely a plug-in hybrid powertrain, in order to meet ever-tightening emissions regulations.
Speaking of electric, Mitsubishi also teased an all-electric pick-up truck model, but this will most likely be a totally different model altogether – it likely won’t share the same platform with this concept.
Mitsubishi has kept mum regarding technical specs, but signs point towards the new Triton adopting an updated ladder frame chassis shared with the next-gen Nissan Navara. We can expect a slightly extended wheelbase and possibly a larger flatbed as a result of which.
As noted, the Mitsubishi XRT Concept will be displayed throughout BIMS 2023 this week, which runs from March 21 to April 2. Mitsubishi didn’t mention a specific date for the launch of the production version, but it did note its entry into the Thai market in fiscal 2023, followed by ASEAN and other markets after.
