10-Year Driving Licence Won't Stop JPJ's Enforcement, Says Loke

Malaysian motorists can now renew their driving licence for up to ten years, up from five years previously.
Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke assures that the new 10-year driving licence renewal will not impede the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) enforcement efforts. He stated that the JPJ has effective methods in place to prevent people with suspended licence or who have committed serious traffic violations from driving. Even if motorists have renewed their licences for up to ten years, JPJ will have access to information about the offenders and will impose the necessary sanctions using yet-to-be-specified methods.

In response to concerns about the difficulties in suspending those who commit serious traffic violations under this new policy, Loke emphasised that the benefits of the 10-year renewal policy far outweigh the number of serious traffic offenders. Loke also revealed plans to renew 10-year licences at post offices across the country. Pos Malaysia will upgrade its system to integrate with JPJ, and once this is completed, motorists will have several options for renewing their licences in addition to visiting JPJ kiosks.

Individuals whose licences have expired since 2018 will also be able to renew them for up to ten years, according to Loke. This flexibility is provided as a result of circumstances such as the Covid-19 pandemic and being stranded abroad. This campaign, however, will only be in effect until December of this year. Those who have failed to renew their licence after three years are forced to reapply for a new licence.
