Government Mulling 10-Year Driving Licence Renewals - Loke
The government is considering allowing drivers to renew their licences for up to ten years, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He stated that officers from the Transport Ministry have been directed to investigate the feasibility of the proposal.
"Perhaps we can offer discounts for 10-year renewals to encourage Malaysians to renew their licences for longer periods. It is a possibility that could be implemented in the future "Loke made the remarks during his closing remarks on the motion of thanks on the Royal Address in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 22).
Loke also stated that the Transport Ministry was conducting a cost-cutting study on the current road tax structure. "We must understand that road taxes generate nearly RM3 billion in revenue for the government. "So far, no decision has been made on the matter, but I will think about it," Loke added. Malaysian driving licences can currently be renewed yearly or for a maximum of five years.
Loke also stated that they were researching the road tax structure for electric vehicles (EV) in order to encourage EV ownership.
He admitted that he was aware that certain EVs had higher road taxes than regular vehicles.
"So far, we have a tax break on EV road taxes. I will direct Transport Ministry officials to investigate how EV taxes can be aligned with our EV promotion policies.
"There must be incentives, such as competitive road taxes and charging stations," Loke added. From January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025, EVs are exempt from paying road taxes.
