Aston Martin And Lucid Teams Up To Power Its Future EVs

Though fashionably late to the electric vehicles (EVs) space, British sportscar marque Aston Martin has perhaps found the best way to catch up quickly. This week, the celebrated sportscar maker announced that it will join forces with American start-up EV makers Lucid for said effort.
The collaboration sees said Gaydon-based sportscar maker contracting the latter California-based EV-making company for a reported sum of over US$450 million (RM2.1 billion+). This will enable Aston Martin to access Lucid’s advanced electric powertrain technologies to build a slew of new electric-powered performance models.
Latest deal sees Aston Martin teaming up with Lucid, makers of the Air Sapphire that rivals the
Tesla Model S.
This deal forms part of Aston Martin’s Racing Green sustainability effort and comes as part of a planned £2+ billion (RM11.89 billion+) investment in advanced tech over the next five years. This also reportedly sees Lucid gaining a 3.7% share in Aston Martin, with said American firm set to receive phased cash payments at an approximate sum of US$232 million (RM1.08 bilion+)
Despite this push towards electrification, Aston Martin’s existing deal with Mercedes-Benz – also one of its shareholders – continues as is. This will ensure Aston Martin continues to have access to said German automaker’s powertrain and electric/electronic architectures for current and future models, including EVs and hybrid (HEVs) alike.
The Lucid Air Sapphire four-door fastback features a groundbreaking tri-motor setup rated at over 1,200 HP!
The supply agreement with Lucid is a game changer for the future EV-led growth of Aston Martin,” says Aston Martin’s executive chairman Lawrence Stroll. The Canadian magnate also notes that besides Aston leveraging on significant investment made by Lucid to develop its world-class tech, Aston Martin will also further enhance and differentiate its drive experience through development led by Roberto Fedeli – Aston’s chief technical officer.
As a preview of what to expect, Lucid is renowned for building performance EVs such as the Air Sapphire that released in Aug 2022. It harnesses a tri-motor setup that generates over 1,200 HP to grant the sleek four-door fastback with a claimed 0-60 MPH (0-96 KM/H) time of 2.0 seconds flat.
