New Porsche Mission X EV Hypercar Concept Is The 918 Spyder Successor
Renowned German automaker Porsche is celebrating its 75th birthday this year. Unlike most folks who celebrate birthdays with cakes and dinner parties, folks at Stuttgart have cooked up something really special for their birthday bash this year, aside from 'renewing' its iconic badge.
Porsche Mission X EV Hypercar Concept
Unveiled today is the all-new Porsche Mission X – the marque’s latest EV hypercar concept. In spite of being a concept per se, Porsche has designed the Mission X for only one purpose – to break the fastest lap record on the notorious Nurburgring track.
We haven’t seen any new Porsche hypercars since the infamous 918 Spyder, which made its debut almost a decade ago. With the 918 boasting a partially-electrified powertrain, it is safe to say that the Mission X, or whatever its production model’s name will be, is going to be its true successor.
Moving back to the new concept model, Porsche’s decision to unveil the Mission X during its 75th anniversary is also on time with the 100th anniversary of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. And coincidentally (or not), the Mission X also draws inspiration from Porsche’s Le Mans prototypes, including the overall silhouette and shape of the car, its doors that open upwards and forwards, as well as the glass bubble-style greenhouse.
And all those curves and straight lines aren’t just for styling per se, as the automaker projects the Mission X to have twice as much downforce as the track-ready 911 GT3 RS.
More impressive is the fact that the Mission X sports carbon fibre exoskeleton that helps to shed extra weights. Although Porsche has yet to disclose the kerb weight of the concept, the automaker claims the Mission X will offer a remarkable power-to-weight ratio of at least 1 HP per 1 KG.
Speaking of power-to-weight ratio, the automaker has also kept the model’s powertrain specs under the wraps, with the only detail revealed is the Mission X will underpin a 900-volt EV architecture, with its batteries stored behind the seats instead under the floorboard.
Some Le Mans inspos can also be seen inside the Mission X. Drivers will get a contrasting seat colour that matches the steering wheel, while both bucket seats get a proper six-point harness seatbelt. While the rest of the cabin seems bare-boned in order to shed as many weights as possible, Porsche still managed to fit in its iconic chronograph watch face, which also acts as lap-time stopwatch.

With the Mission X only being a concept model at this stage, it raises a question whether Porsche will actually build a production version of it. When asked by Motor1 during a special media session, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said, "During the next month, we will consider to build it. It isn't decided yet, there's some concept of work to do, but good opportunities."
Should the Mission X go into production in the following months, then the production version of the Mission X is poised to try and reclaim the title of the fastest production vehicle to lap around the Green Hell. That record is currently held by the Mercedes-AMG One – an AMG hypercar that is powered by a Formula One power unit. It is safe to say that the Mission X has a mighty task to tackle, especially considering that it is a full-blown EV, rather than having a hybrid powertrain like the AMG One.
As for the Nurburgring’s EV record, that title is currently held by the Tesla Model S Plaid, who recently dethroned the Porsche Taycan Turbo S to take the title home. But we reckon that Porsche stood a chance to retake the title with the Mission X, although there’s a chance that the Rimac Nevera – currently the world’s fastest production EV model – might take that title first.
But then again, all of these are just speculations, as we can’t totally confirm yet whether the Mission X will enter production.
