Next-Gen BMW M5 Touring Teased Ahead of 2024 Debut
G60-gen BMW i5 M60
The BMW 5 Series has already entered the next-gen phase, and now it’s time for its M-badged counterpart to get the same treatment. Ahead of its debut in 2024, BMW has teased the G61-gen BMW M5 Touring model in a series of teaser images, showcasing the camouflaged-draped wagon in a flesh for the first time.
2024 BMW M5 Touring (G61) teaser image
The first teaser image showcases the M5 Touring covered beneath the cloak, with the only visible part of the car being the illuminated taillights. However, this image at least gave us a good impression of the M5 Touring’s side profile, featuring the traditional long-roof wagon bodystyle. Aside from that, we can also see the wagon’s prominent wheel arches that grants extra room to house bigger tyres.
The second and third teaser images, on the other hand, gave us a glimpse of the rear half of the car, as they are partially uncovered. You can see several elements taken from its saloon counterpart such as the LED taillights, as well as the rear bumper design. Also present here are the roof-mounted spoiler, while the quad-piped M exhaust system promises this wagon will pop and crackle like its predecessor.
Visuals aside, perhaps the biggest revelation about the next-gen M5 is that it will be offered with an electrified powertrain for the first time in its history. Although BMW remains silent about the details of its heart, we suspect that it might be related to the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup we saw on the BMW XM – the first M model to get a hybrid powertrain.
BMW XM PHEV super-SUV
For reference, the XM’s PHEV system consists of a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 mill – the same engine used by previous-gen M5 – that is mated to an electric motor, juiced by a sizable 29.5-kWh battery pack. This setup grants the XM a total system output of 653 HP and 800 NM, propelling this super-SUV from nought to 100 KM/H in just 4.3 seconds. Should the new M5 Touring emulate the XM’s power output, it will be the most powerful M5 model to date.
The 2024 BMW M5 Touring is poised to make its global debut later in 2024, and it will face fierce competition against fellow German rivals. We know that Audi is refreshing the RS6 Avant wagon, while Mercedes-Benz recently launched the S214-gen E-Class estate, with an AMG version following suit.
More importantly, the G61-gen M5 Touring will be the first M5 wagon in years, with the last M5 model to come with a long roof being the E61-gen M5, which was launched back in 2007.
