Report: BMW X4 Will Be Axed, Won't Survive for a Next-Gen Redux

The X4 might not be getting a next-gen redux, as BMW reportedly will axe the SUV crossover from its lineup.
Back when BMW launched the third-gen (U11) X1 SUV, it was immediately followed by the launch of its sporty coupe twin a year later, the second-gen (U10) BMW X2. With the Bavarian marque recently launching the fourth-gen (G45) BMW X3 SUV, it quickly got us thinking about the subsequent launch of its coupe counterpart, the BMW X4.
However, it turns out that such a thing might not be a reality, as BMW reportedly plans to axe the X4 from its product lineup. As reported by Motor1, the Bavarian-badged GLC Coupe rival won’t survive a next-gen redux simply because the new X2 has grown in size, so much so that it has overlapped with the X4.

On top of that, the price gap between the X4 and the X2 has been significantly narrowed, meaning that there’s no point in keeping both models in their lineup. BMW also told Motor1 that the larger X6 will fill the void left by the X4, in case buyers are looking for a larger coupe SUV crossover.

Fourth-gen (G45) BMW X3
Additionally, BMW also added that the newly-launched G45 X3 will also fill the void left by the X4. Unlike both the X1 and X2 that use an FWD-based platform, the new X3 continues to use an RWD-based platform just like its predecessor, while still getting its motivation from a straight-six mill instead of four-pot ones, at least for the top-spec M50 variant.

As of now, BMW has yet to reveal the end production date for the current-gen X4. Given that the new X3’s deliveries are set to commence late this year, logic tells us that it won’t be long before the X4 meets the proverbial axe, possibly not surviving for another production year.
While it is quite common to see ICE-powered cars getting axed left-and-right in this age of impending electromobility, it is pretty peculiar to see an automaker axing one of its best-selling SUV models. Dare we say that this is one of those rare instances where we’re not particularly sad about the loss of yet another ICE-powered nameplate, although we’d say it is not entirely the product’s fault.

Although the ICE-powered X4 is due for a date with death itself, there might be a chance that we’re still getting an all-electric version as its indirect successor. According to BMWBLOG, a fully electric BMW iX4 is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2027, and it will be based on the marque’s new Neue Klasse platform.
With BMW previously voiced out its plans to launch at least six new EVs using this dedicated platform, the iX4 might be one of them, following the debut of the new 3 Series sedan and the now-confirmed iX3, which are due to take place in 2026 and 2025, respectively.
