Chinese automaking giant Geely could possibly enter arguably one of the region’s most lucrative electric vehicle (EV) markets – Thailand.

According to unnamed sources cited by newswire Reuters, the group is still in the early stages of planning its entry into the Kingdom, which could also see a local assembly (CKD) effort established there too.

Fuelling this report further is the fact that Thailand's Board of Investment held discussions with five major Chinese EV makers – Geely included – during a roadshow to China in April this year, its Secretary-General Narit Therdsteerasukdi said.

The other brands said board spoke with reportedly included the likes of BYD, Chongqing Changan Automobile Co Ltd, Jiangling Motors Corp Ltd, as well as JAC Motors.

Brands such as Radar (left) with its RD6 EV pick-up truck, as well as Zeekr (right) with its latest X crossover, could find themselves entering the Thai market.

Given Thailand's affinity for pick-up trucks, the Radar RD6 could be a top choice for Geely to break into said kingdom's market.

Whilst Geely denies this plan and has kept mum since, Reuters claims that these reported details were provided by unnamed sources with knowledge of the discussion. Said report continues by noting that the Zhejiang-based group is in the midst of weighing out their options, including identifying which of its many brands and models to either import or manufacture locally in Thailand.

No firm decision has been made, but Geely has plenty in its arsenal to choose from and suit any consumer segment, especially in a diverse marketspace as what the Land of Smiles holds.

Besides entry-level EV brands and products, the group also has upscale EV brands such as Zeekr at its disposal. Given the Kingdom’s affinity for pick-up trucks, offerings like the Radar RD6 EV pick-up truck appears viable too.

Presently, Geely has a 49.9% stake in Malaysian carmaker Proton, spawning badge-engineered products like the latest X90 SUV pictured.

While this remains as mere speculation for now, Geely’s possible entry into the booming EV market just north of our border could signal a paradigm shift for a number of its other brands and their availability in neighbouring markets – ours included.

Presently, Geely is active in Malaysia through its 49.9% stake in homegrown brand Proton, spawning badge-engineered offerings like the recently launched X90 SUV.
