Launched: Volvo FM EV Truck – 666 HP & 2,400 NM, 300 KM Range, From RM2 Million*

MITI minister YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul, officiating the launch of Volvo FM EV truck
Volvo Trucks Malaysia (VTM) launched what is perhaps the biggest EV model to debut in Malaysia, the Volvo Trucks electric prime movers. Not only is this the first all-electric prime mover to debut in Malaysia, it is also the first of its kind to arrive into the ASEAN region.

Volvo FM all-electric prime mover
VTM’s first EV prime movers line-up consists of three core models – the Volvo FM, FH and FMX, all featuring all-electric powertrain. Shown today was the FM model specifically. It can harness up to three electric drive units that deliver up to 666 HP (490 kW) and a whopping 2,400 NM of twist. As for axle configurations, options include 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 setups.
This massive electric powertrain grants these electric Volvo trucks with a smoother ride and drive, which is supplemented by the Volvo Dynamic Steering active steering system. This enhances the driving dynamics and directional stability for heavy-duty EV trucks such as the FM model shown today, which are noticeably heavier compared to their traditional combustion (ICE)-powered counterparts.

The Volvo EV trucks feature modular-style battery setup, which is chargeable via CCS2-type plug
In terms of battery, the Volvo EV trucks come equipped with a modular battery system that can fit up to six individual battery packs that can hold a capacity of up to 540 kWh. This, in turn, grants the 12-tonne FM EV prime mover in particular with a projected maximum EV range of 300 KM.
As for charging, these EV trucks support 43 kW AC charging input, which will fully-charge them in about 10 hours. If you are in a hurry, these EV trucks also accept rapid DC charging inputs as high as 250 kW, which can reduce the full-charge time to just under two hours.

Based on independent testing, Volvo claims the FH EV truck has the potential to use 50% less energy compared to its diesel-powered counterpart under similar driving conditions, thus providing businesses with better fuel economy to cover the same distance.

Thanks to its all-electric setup, the Volvo EV trucks ride and drive significantly smoother compared to its ICE-powered counterparts. With no engine noises and much less on-board vibrations, the trucks provide a more relaxed and safe environment for drivers to work in, especially for long-haul trips. Meanwhile, the trucks’ low NVH level allows them to detect any foul noises coming either from the inside or outside.

Speaking of comfort, all Volvo EV trucks now come standard with modern amenities and equipment. Highlights include the 12-inch digital instrument cluster with halo lights, the smaller 9-inch touch infotainment display that is also controllable via buttons, while the FM sleeper cabin has been upgraded with improved materials for better comfort and safety of the occupants.

Now available for fleet orders, the all-electric Volvo prime movers command price tags that are arguably as large as its physical size. In the case of the FM model shown, CariCarz.com has understood that it starts at just under RM2 million excluding options, duties, taxes and on-road costs.
As for the other models, prices vary depending on the model's battery and powertrain setups (dual or tri-motor). Two units of the Volvo FM EV are already spoken for, as local integrated logistics provider Swift Haulage Berhad become the first adopter of these EV freight trucks in Malaysia.

To further support these EV trucks, VTM is also seeking to build a dedicated EV charging station network, with its first dedicated heavy-duty EV truck charging station already operational at the truck-maker’s headquarters in Shah Alam.

Moreover, the Swedish truck marque is working closely with government agencies, energy providers and partners such as the Malaysian Green Technology And Climate Change (MGTC) to address infrastructure challenges. It includes collaborating with highway concessionaires like PLUS Expressways Berhad, as well as other local EV charge point operators, at providing technical knowledge for commercial vehicle charging infrastructure.
