The government, specifically the Public Works Ministry, has spent no less than RM73.45 million fixing 2,950 potholes on federal roads as of June this year.

According to Bernama, the Public Works Ministry (KKR) has spent no less than RM73.45 million in the first half of this year to fix potholes and maintain street furniture across all federal roads nationwide. This was confirmed by its minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanti Linggi.

Said amount was spent as part of the government’s allocation for the ‘My Jalan’ campaign, which was billed at RM217.8 million and aimed towards upgrading road and safety infrastructure. As of June this year, the minister adds that 2,950 potholes on roads were fixed.

Besides potholes, Datuk Seri Alexander also notes that street furniture repair works on guardrails, signages, faded road markings, drains, lamp posts, road dividers and more, have been completed on these roads too.

The ministry is expected to continue said efforts, more so following its recent announcement where it seeks to launch a new national road infrastructure safety campaign sometime this month. Set to be launched by PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the campaign will include efforts to overcoming main issues of potholed and damaged roads, as well as other issues related to road equipment, Datuk Seri Alexander said.

“It is hoped that campaigns to expand advocacy and understanding related to road maintenance safety can increase the involvement of all parties, especially industry players, government and private agencies and the people in efforts to maintain roads and the related infrastructure,” said the Minister regarding this upcoming campaign.

Through a Facebook post, Datuk Seri Alexander has promised more details surrounding this campaign will be shared in due time as well. In said post, he also acknowledged how the issue of roads with potholes and infrastructure-related problems are frequently reported by the press and social media users.

“From the first day I set foot in the KKR, this is one of the matters that I have been emphasising to everyone in the ministry,” continued Datu Seri Alexander further in the same social media post.
