Lithium-Ion Batteries Made In The US From Recycled Metals Coming Soon
Lithium-ion batteries made from recycled materials will be manufactured in the United States in the near future. While they are as efficient as other batteries, they have a much lower carbon footprint, The Verge reported.
This accomplishment is the result of a collaboration between BASF, a battery material manufacturer, and battery manufacturer Nanotech Energy to produce lithium-ion batteries from recycled materials for the North American market.

BASF plans to manufacture cathode active materials from recycled metals. These will then be used by Nanotech Energy to create cells for future lithium-ion batteries. The use of recycled metals in the production of batteries should reduce their carbon footprint by about 25%.
The first prototypes should be available by 2024. Furthermore, the American Battery Technology Company (ABTC), a recycling start-up, will recover materials such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese from Nanotech Energy for its own work.

This announcement is similar to that of Northvolt of Sweden, which recently unveiled a prototype battery made of recycled metals (cobalt, nickel, and manganese). The company, which collaborates with Volkswagen, has stated that mass production of this type of battery will be difficult before 2030.
This push for recycled materials is driven not only by the growing demand for new batteries, but also by environmental concerns. The batteries used in electric vehicles are by far the most harmful to the environment, owing to the amount of valuable materials they contain and the waste they generate. As a result, it is critical to establish as many recycling programmes as possible.
Automakers, like manufacturers, are getting involved in recycling the raw materials used to make the batteries that power their electric vehicles. Renault, for example, plans to recycle metals from used batteries in a closed loop.
