MINI is ramping up its electromobility adoption game, as the marque decides to upgrade and improve its production facilities to cater for the barrage of new MINI EV models coming in years’ time. In achieving this, BMW Group, together with grants from the UK government, has allocated over GBP 600 million (RM3.5 billion approx.) of investments to transform the MINI Plant Oxford into a full-fledged EV manufacturing hub.

Next-Gen MINI Cooper Electric 3-Door hatch will be produced in Plant Oxford by 2026

Covering both the MINI Oxford assembly line and Swindon body pressing plant, this investment will see the Plant Oxford producing new MINI EV models like the newly-launched next-gen MINI Cooper Electric, as well as the upcoming MINI Aceman EV by 2026. Aside from the Plant Oxford, next-gen MINI EVs will also be produced at BMW Group’s EV manufacturing plant in Zhangjiagang, China.

To cater for mass EV production, new battery manufacturing and logistics facilities will be built within the Plant Oxford compound, while the Plant Swindon facility’s body shop will get an extension, allowing for higher total production volume. With these new upgrades, the MINI Plant Oxford will be able to produce up to 200,000 units of vehicles annually in the “medium-term”, with the bulk of it being the next-gen EV models.

“Mini has always been aware of its history – Oxford is and remains the heart of the brand,” said Stefanie Wurst, head of the Mini brand. “I am delighted that the two new, fully electric Mini models – the Mini Cooper and Mini Aceman – are also being produced in Oxford, thereby confirming our path to a fully electric future,” said MINI boss Stefanie Wurst.

Other ICE-powered models like the next-gen MINI 3-Door and 5-Door will continue to be produced at Plant Oxford by the end of this decade, as this production facility will be transitioned into a dedicated all-electric production hub, in-line with the marque’s electromobility adoption plan.
