All-Electric Audi R8 Successor Development “Well Under Way”

The Audi R8 Coupe V10 GT RWD run-out special marked the then of the supercar's life-cycle last year, but an all-electric successor has been mooted.

The Audi R8 sportscar reached the end of its life-cycle recently, but house Ingolstadt is poised to succeed it with a brand new and all-electric follow up. Now, reports have surfaced online indicating said successor’s development is “well under way” ahead of its planned production commencement in 2027.

Moreover, reports overseas indicate that the four-ringed marque could be developing a “bespoke electric vehicle (EV) architecture” for a low-volume, purpose-built sportscar and supercar models. Speaking with Autocar UK, Audi’s Technical Development boss Oliver Hoffman more or less confirmed this.

Reports online indicate that the all-electric successor to the R8 will have a mix of the best traits from Volkswagen Group's MEB, PPE and SSP platforms.

Hoffmann told the publication, “We will use systems and modules out of the [SSP] platform, or toolkit, and there is some space to bring cars out of the platform.” Hoffmann even suggested these models could also borrow from the company’s other electric platforms as well.

Certainly, future Audi sportscar models are poised to have a mix of things derived from various Volkswagen Group platforms – namely MEB, PPE, and SSP. Ideally, the end-result promises the best of both worlds whilst also keeping development costs down as these models will have access the best of each platform.

Insiders have hinted that the R8's all-electric successor will be partially hand-built, and will remain as a two-door coupe with race-inspired characteristics.

Autocar UK’s report continues further with insiders saying work is “well under way” on an electric successor to the R8. Adding to which, there’s also the promise that said successor staying true to its roots in having just two doors, race-inspired ethos, and “more power than anything else” in the marque’s lineup.

Part of staying to its roots, Autocar UK adds, is that said R8 successor with be at least partially hand-made to better reflect its high-end nature. Whilst nothing is confirmed yet, Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume had confirmed prior that SSP-based models will have upwards of 1,677 HP on tap.

Based on the latter fact, a wave of EV sportscars, supercars and hypercars from the group – this supposed R8 successor included – are a certain to debut in the coming years.
