The next-gen BMW 5 Series (left) is getting a long-roofed wagon version (right) later this year...

The coveted BMW 5 Series has entered its eighth-gen iteration this year, with the saloon version (chassis code G60) already made its debut a few moons ago. While we’ve already known that a wagon version – also known as the Touring – will follow suit, nothing much has been revealed by BMW about them, except for the vague teaser images of the souped-up BMW M5 Touring model published earlier this year.

Fortunately, this comes to an end today, as the design for the next-gen 5 Series Touring has been accidentally leaked online, giving us a first-look glimpse on this sporty wagon. Leaked via a design trademark application in the UK, the long-roofed 5 Series features similar design cues as we’ve seen on its three-boxed counterpart.

For starters, the 5 Series Touring shown in said trademark application appears to be the base model that serves as a canvas for both the electric and souped-up M-badged versions. At the front, it gets the same trapezoidal-shaped headlights, flanking the sizable kidney grille. Meanwhile, the front bumper design is being kept rather simple, featuring a wide lower apron and two vertical side vents.

From the side, the 5 Series Touring appears to be longer than its saloon twin – at least from the naked eye’s view. Its elongated roofline is kept simple, as you’d expected to see in any other fast wagons from the Bavarian marque. Meanwhile, the G61 wagon’s derriere is stylised with the same slim taillights design plus sporty L-shaped rear bumper accents – both similar as we saw on the 5 Series sedan.

We can expect the 5 Series Touring to get the same PHEV (left) and fully-electric (right) guises as we saw on its saloon counterpart

Unfortunately, this trademark application only reveals the basic design of the 5 Series Touring, with its other specs like the powertrain setup remain unknown for now. At this point, we’ve already known that the 5 Series Touring will be offered with the same powertrain options as its sedan twin, which includes a baseline ICE-powered model, a partially-electrified hybrid model, a fully-electric i5 version, as well as a souped-up M-badged version called the M5 Touring.

For reference, the baseline BMW 520i sedan gets a mild-hybrid (MHEV) setup consisting of a familiar 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged petrol mill paired with a 48-volt MHEV system, delivering up to 205 HP and 320 NM. Meanwhile, the all-electric BMW i5 sedan comes in several variants, with the souped-up i5 M60 xDrive model being powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup rated at 593 HP and 820 NM.

The next-gen BMW M5 Touring was teased earlier this year, ahead of its 2024 debut

As we mentioned earlier, BMW initially teased the M5 Touring model earlier this year, with the super wagon poised to become the first 5 Series model to get the M treatment. The M5 Touring wagon will reportedly get a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain setup derived from the manic XM super-SUV, featuring a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 mill that is mated to an electric motor that can deliver up to 738 HP and 1,000 NM.

While BMW has yet to reveal its exact launching date, the G61-gen BMW 5 Series Touring could make its global debut before the end of the year, though sales and deliveries are expected to commence later in 2024. However, we can expect more details on this fast wagon to be revealed by the Bavarian marque as we get closer to its eventual launch.
