First batch of the Chery Omoda E5 EV SUV arrives in Malaysia today, ahead of its much-anticipated debut
Chery Malaysia today has welcomed its first-ever all-electric model into our shores, with the first batch of the Chery Omoda E5 has finally arrived in Malaysia today. Ahead of its much-anticipated debut set to take place in near future, this first batch of the Omoda E5 is slated for an exclusive media preview event, allowing numerous media representatives to experience this EV SUV firsthand.
As expected, this first batch of the Omoda E5 that has landed in Port Klang today is fully-imported (CBU) from Chery International’s main production facility in Wuhu, China. However, Chery Malaysia previously suggested that the firm is planning to locally-assemble (CKD) the Omoda E5 at Inokom’s production facility in Kulim, Kedah, alongside its ICE-powered counterpart.

Originally made its global debut earlier this year at the Auto Shanghai 2023 motor show, the Omoda E5 stood as the all-electric version of the marque’s B-segment SUV fighter, the Omoda 5. Aside from the local Chinese market, the Omoda 5 EV is also on sale in several key international markets including Indonesia, where the EV SUV is now open for booking in said market.
A brief walkthrough of the Omoda E5’s specs, this EV SUV is exclusively powered by a front-mounted (FWD) single electric motor setup rated at 221 HP (165 kW), allowing it to finish a 0-100 KM/H sprint in 7.8 seconds. Juice is provided by a 61-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers the Omoda E5 with a maximum CLTC range of 450 KM. Though no exact numbers were revealed, Chery claims the E5 can be charged from 20-80% in just 30 minutes.

On the visual front, the Omoda E5 looks painstakingly similar to its fossil-gouging twin, but both models can be differentiated by its front face. Aside from featuring a grille-less front end, the E5 also rides on a different set of alloy wheels with a more enclosed design for better aerodynamics, while the tailgate is donned with the E5 badge instead of Omoda 5.

As per our previous report regarding this EV SUV, Chery Malaysia is keen to launch the Omoda E5 some time in Q1 2024, where it will be the firm’s first-ever all-electric model to be sold in Malaysia. Should Chery Malaysia’s plan to locally-assemble the E5 come into fruition, we can expect this EV SUV to be priced in the same region as its petrol-powered twin, which retails from RM108,800 to RM118,800.
