Prominent Chinese automaker Chongqing Sokon Motor has disclosed its intentions to join Thailand's electric vehicle (EV) commercial market. The company will be collaborating with a local firm on this venture, Bangkok post reported.
Chongqing Sokon Motor's sales director, David Luo, expressed optimism about the commercial EV market's potential growth in Thailand and ASEAN, forecasting increased demand as the country's economy grows.
Thailand's robust automotive supply chains in ASEAN and its standing as a major car production base are the main reasons the company chose Thailand as its new hub for EV production and exports.
There are joint talks with Planet EV Co. regarding the production of battery-powered commercial vehicles, such as vans and pickups.
Kittapart Wiriyachanta, the chief operating officer of Planet EV, expressed the company's eagerness to complete the investment plan. In order to assist the Thai EV industry, he disclosed that Planet EV intends to go into EV manufacturing and battery charging.
The construction of EV charging facilities is expected to require an investment of 30-40 million baht, according to the company.
In Thailand, passenger electric vehicles (EVs) are very popular; they make up 10% of all car sales, but the commercial EV market is still relatively small. Chongqing Sokon Motor sees room for future sales growth and thinks Thailand's commercial EV market is just getting started.
Under the Sokon brand, Planet EV intends to distribute commercial EVs; the first models, which will include pickups, will be imported from China. By 2024, the company wants to have 1,000 commercial EVs sold and 1,000 chargers installed.
