New Volkswagen Golf Model Teased Ahead of 2024 Debut

Volkswagen has revealed a teaser for a new Golf model, possibly the updated Mk8 model
It is no secret that Volkswagen is planning to launch an all-electric Golf model for the Mk9 generation, set to arrive much later in 2028. Ahead of the eventual demise of ICE-powered Golf, the Wolfsburg-based marque decides to give the current Mk8-gen model a last hurrah in the form of a mid-life update next year.
Ahead of its debut, Volkswagen has finally published its first teaser of the upcoming new Golf, also known as the Golf Mk8.5 by some. Revealed via a short video recap of the marque’s work this year, VW CEO Thomas Schafer announced that a new product will be launched some time in 2024, before the video cuts to show the illuminated headlights and emblem of the supposed Mk8.5 Golf.

From this teaser, we can see that the new Golf will sport a full-width LED light bar at the front with an illuminated VW badge at the front, plus the LED headlights are also different from the current Golf model, featuring hexagonal light signatures for change. Keen eyes will also notice that this shadow-draped model comes with roof rails, indicating that this could be the wagon variant of the Golf.

The current Mk8 model could be the final ICE-powered Golf model produced by Volkswagen, before the arrival of the all-electric Mk9 model in 2028
While it is exciting to see a new Golf model coming out, the fact that VW has already planned to launch an all-electric Golf Mk9 later in 2028 means that the days of ICE-powered Golf models are numbered. Unless VW somehow finds a way to make both the ICE-powered and EV Golf models coexist, the upcoming Golf Mk8.5 might just be the final pure combustion Golf model we’ll ever see, bringing an end to a five-decade-long dynasty that started with the original Golf Mk1 back in 1974.

As for now, we’ve got no details regarding the specs of this upcoming new Golf model, though we can’t expect many changes since this is just a mere mid-life update. Aside from the tweaked front face hinted by the new teaser, we can also expect the cabin to get several new pieces of equipment, including a bigger infotainment screen like what we saw on the new Tiguan and Passat. With the Mk8 model still featuring the finicky touch-sensitive controls, our fingers are crossed that VW has updated them with the buttons, just like what they did to both aforementioned models.
